A new visual identity for the Somerset town of Bridgwater — designed to celebrate local character, history, and community spirit while engaging residents and attracting visitors.
About Bridgwater
Bridgwater is a historic market town in Somerset with a vibrant cultural scene, best known for its spectacular illuminated winter carnival — one of Europe’s largest.
Challenge
Bridgwater Town Council wanted a fun, dynamic identity that captured the town’s unique personality, to celebrate local character, history, and community spirit. while being adaptable across seasons and uses. The design needed to resonate with locals, visitors, and businesses alike, and communicate a sense of pride and place.
Approach
After spending time in Bridgwater — talking to residents, exploring its streets, and researching its history — we worked with One Voice Media to develop a series of initial design directions.
The chosen concept drew inspiration from the town’s association with the Guy Fawkes Rebellion and its famous winter carnival. The resulting identity features a firework motif symbolising celebration and community, paired with a sister sun motif and seasonal colour palettes to ensure year-round relevance. A hand-drawn script font was developed, incorporating a flowing swoosh that references the bridges spanning the River Parrett — a defining feature of the town.
Outcome
A complete set of brand assets and comprehensive usage guidelines were delivered, alongside applications for banners, signage, and social media. A supporting destination website was designed and built by Toco Digital, extending the identity into a full communications ecosystem for residents and visitors.
