About Northgate Yard
Northgate Yard is a council-led development featuring a multi-screen cinema, bowling alley, sports bar, and multiple restaurants, located on the site of a historic brewery.
Challenge
Sedgemoor District Council wanted a modern lifestyle brand that reflected both the heritage of the site and the forward-looking natureof the new development. The identity needed to appeal to residents, visitors, and commercial tenants — without feeling overly civic or institutional.
Approach
After an in-depth site visit and research into local history, we discovered that a 19th-century brewery once occupied the site, featuring a distinctive horse emblem still visible on buildings around Bridgwater.
We reinterpreted this heritage detail into a modern brand mark, combining it with a wood-textured aesthetic to convey authenticity and craftsmanship. To subtly acknowledge the Council’s involvement, the colour palette was derived from the Council’s brand — creating a connection without compromising the development’s independent identity.
Outcome
The resulting identity balances history and modernity, giving Northgate Yard a distinctive, approachable look and feel. The design has been successfully applied across print and digital channels, including signage, social media, marketing collateral, and commercial opportunity brochures, helping position the development as a vibrant community destination.
